Sleep and Heat: What the Research Says

You are not imagining it: warm nights measurably shorten sleep, and researchers can now put numbers on the damage. That matters in Switzerland because our nights are warming faster than our days. Here is what the three most important studies found, why city bedrooms get hit hardest, and what actually helps, from free tricks to a cooled bedroom.

What is a tropical night?

MeteoSwiss defines a tropical night as one where the temperature never falls below 20 °C. Until the start of this century they were rare outside Ticino; today low-lying Switzerland records them almost every year (MeteoSwiss). They are the nights when sleep gets hard.

The trend behind them is stark: the warmest night minimum of the year has risen about 4.5 °C since 1901 at the Zurich, Geneva, Basel and Bern stations, and the five highest night minimums on record all occurred within the last ten years (MeteoSwiss). Nights are outpacing days.

Why does heat disrupt sleep?

To fall asleep, your core temperature needs to drop slightly, and your body sheds that heat through the skin. The warmer the bedroom, the slower this works, so falling asleep takes longer and sleep gets shallower. The studies below measured where the trouble starts: the effects become clearly visible once night temperatures pass about 25 °C.

What do the big studies actually show?

Three studies, three different methods, one direction: warm nights cost sleep, and the loss is large enough to measure across whole populations.

765'000 Americans: warmer nights, more bad nights

Obradovich et al. linked 765'000 survey responses from 2002 to 2011 with local weather data. A night 1 °C warmer than normal produced about three additional nights of insufficient sleep per 100 people per month; scaled to the US population, that is roughly nine million extra bad nights every month. The effect was about three times larger in summer, and it was not spread evenly: for people over 65 it was roughly double that of younger adults, and lower-income households were more than three times as affected as wealthier ones, presumably because air conditioning is what buys your way out (Science Advances, 2017). The projection: about six extra bad nights per 100 people per month by 2050, and about fourteen by 2099.

7.4 million measured nights: minus 14 minutes when it stays hot

Minor et al. skipped the questionnaires and read sleep trackers: 47'628 people in 68 countries, 7.41 million recorded nights. When the night minimum stays above 25 °C, the probability of sleeping less than seven hours rises by 3.5 percentage points; on nights above 30 °C, people sleep about 14 minutes less. The authors estimate we already lose around 44 hours of sleep per person per year to heat, rising to 50 to 58 hours by 2099 depending on emissions (One Earth, 2022).

The Harvard dorm study: slower brains the next morning

Cedeño Laurent et al. tracked 44 students through a Boston heatwave in July 2016. Dorms without air conditioning averaged 26.3 °C indoors; dorms with AC, 21.4 °C. The students in the hot rooms reacted 13.4 percent slower in cognition tests, were 13.3 percent slower at arithmetic and completed about 10 percent less work overall (PLOS Medicine, 2018). The point that surprised people: these were healthy young adults, not a vulnerable group.

The economic echo is real too: the ILO projects that by 2030, heat stress will cost the equivalent of more than 2 percent of working hours worldwide every year (ILO, 2019).

Why are city bedrooms the worst?

Because cities do not cool down at night. Night temperatures in Swiss cities run up to 5 to 7 °C above the surrounding countryside, which is why cities see clearly more tropical nights while their daytime heat-day counts are only slightly higher (MeteoSwiss).

And the hot stretches are getting longer where people sleep: in a 1.5-degree world, inner-city Zurich and Geneva can expect two or more heatwaves per year, with the longest lasting seven to eight days, against three to five days in the countryside (MeteoSwiss blog, 2026). Top-floor flats add their own penalty: the heat stored in the roof radiates down exactly when you go to bed.

What actually helps?

Work up the ladder from free to expensive, and be honest about where each rung ends. On a true tropical night the free options run out, because the cool outside air you would flush in simply is not there.

  1. Shutters down before the sun arrives. The cheapest cooling in Switzerland is not letting heat in. Close shutters on sun-facing windows in the morning, not at noon.
  2. Night flushing. Open everything as soon as the outside air is cooler than the inside. Works beautifully in normal summers, fails by definition on a tropical night: outside never drops below 20 °C.
  3. A fan. It removes no heat from the room; it helps sweat evaporate, which feels several degrees cooler. Cheap to run, and often enough at 26 °C. It changes nothing about the room temperature the studies flag.
  4. Cool shower, light bedding. Small, real, temporary.
  5. Cooling the bedroom. The only measure that changes the number the research keeps pointing at: nighttime room temperature. Keeping the bedroom below the 25 °C threshold from the wristband study removes exactly the conditions under which measurable sleep loss begins.

Common questions about sleep and heat

What is the best bedroom temperature for sleep?

The research gives a clearer ceiling than an ideal: measurable sleep loss begins when the night stays above about 25 °C, and gets worse above 30 °C (Minor et al.). Below that ceiling, preference varies from person to person. Practically: keep the bedroom under 25 °C and stop optimising decimals.

Do tropical nights only happen in cities?

No, but cities get far more of them. With nights up to 5 to 7 °C warmer than the countryside, a suburban bedroom may see two tropical nights in a summer where an inner-city flat sees ten. Top floors under flat roofs are the worst combination.

Is a fan enough on a tropical night?

It helps and it is cheap to run, so try it first. But a fan cools you, not the room: the thermometer next to your bed does not move. On nights when the room itself stays above 25 °C, the wristband data says you will still sleep worse.

Can you sleep next to an air conditioner?

Yes, if it is quiet enough. A portable split runs at 38 to 39 dB(A) in its quietest mode, roughly quiet-library level, and because the compressor sits in the outdoor unit, the noise stays outside the window. Owners confirm it: "way more quiet. You can easily sleep with it on" is the recurring Reddit verdict on the PortaSplit (redditrecs.com).

Two honest notes: no compressor is silent, and the outdoor unit makes noise your neighbours can hear, so night rules apply. Very light sleepers do well with a timer: cool the bedroom to 22 °C before bed, let the unit switch off, and the room stays comfortable for hours behind closed shutters.
