Air conditioners have a reputation in Switzerland. The Local warned expats that mobile units are "notorious energy guzzlers", and half the country seems to believe cooling costs a fortune. It depends entirely on the device class. Here are the real numbers, calculated with the official 2026 electricity tariffs, so you can check every step.

What does an air conditioner cost per hour in Switzerland?

At the 2026 Swiss median household tariff of 27.7 Rp./kWh, an efficient portable split (SEER 6.1) costs about 11 Rp. per hour of cooling. A split at SEER 5.6 costs about 12 Rp., a typical monoblock (EER 2.6) about 26 Rp., and a 45 W fan about 1.2 Rp. Over a 500-hour summer that is roughly CHF 56.–, CHF 61.–, CHF 130.– and CHF 6.– respectively.

What do you pay for electricity in 2026?

The official reference is the ElCom tariff comparison. For the standard household category H4 (five-room flat, 4'500 kWh per year), the Swiss median total price in 2026 is 27.70 Rp./kWh. That is about 4.5 percent below 2025 (29.00) but still roughly 35 percent above 2021 (20.47); the peak was 2024 at 32.14. The cantonal spread is wide: Zug pays 21.88 Rp./kWh, Basel-Stadt 33.25. Your commune can sit above or below its cantonal median, so look up your own tariff before trusting anyone's cost table, including ours.

How is the cost calculated?

One formula, no magic: electrical draw = cooling output divided by efficiency, and cost per hour = draw times tariff. Our assumptions, stated openly so you can recalculate: the room needs an average of 2.45 kW of cooling while the unit runs (70 percent of the 3.5 kW rating), 500 running hours per summer (about 8 hours a day for 9 weeks), and the 2026 median tariff of 27.7 Rp./kWh.

One detail matters when comparing device classes: splits publish SEER (EN 14825), which weights realistic part-load operation. Monoblocks usually publish only EER, measured at full load in a lab. Keep that in mind for the table below.

Yes, our own S12 loses this table to the PortaSplit. SEER 5.6 against 6.1 costs about CHF 5.– per summer; the S12 answers with a CHF 391.– lower purchase price. Both are honest trade-offs, and which one wins depends on how many summers you count.

Why monoblocks cost even more than the table shows

The 26 Rp. figure flatters the monoblock. Its EER is measured in a lab, without the self-sabotage of real rooms: the single exhaust hose creates negative pressure that pulls warm outside air back in through every gap, so the delivered cooling per kWh is lower in practice than the label suggests. What does one cooled night cost?

About 90 Rappen. Eight hours of sleep at 11.1 Rp. per hour comes to roughly CHF 0.90 at the median tariff; about CHF 1.05 in Basel-Stadt, about CHF 0.70 in Zug. What does heating with it cost?

Surprisingly little. The PortaSplit and the S12 both heat at SCOP 4.0, meaning one kWh of electricity delivers about four kWh of heat. At the 2026 median tariff, a kWh of heat costs about 6.9 Rp., against roughly 27.7 Rp. from a plug-in resistive heater. The honest scope: these are shoulder-season heaters for a single room, a home office in March or a bedroom in October, not a replacement for your building's heating.

Is air conditioning worth it for a few hot weeks?

The electricity is not the question: CHF 44.– to 67.– per summer for a split is pocket money. The purchase price is the real decision, and the trend is not on the side of waiting. MeteoSwiss measured the hottest ten-day stretch on record in June 2026, and Swiss summers now run 3.4 °C above pre-industrial levels. If heat merely annoys you, keep the fan. If it costs you sleep for six weeks a year, spread CHF 799.– to 1'190.– over the summers ahead and judge again; heating capability in spring and autumn shortens the payback further.

How do you keep running costs low?

  • Shutters down before the sun hits the window. Free cooling beats any kWh.
  • Ventilate hard at night and early morning, then close everything.
  • Cool the room you are in and keep its door closed.
  • Set 25 to 26 °C, not 20 °C. Every degree lower costs extra energy.
  • Seal the window opening with a window seal so the unit is not cooling the street.
  • Use sleep mode and timers instead of running around the clock.
  • Clean the filters; a clogged filter wastes electricity before it does anything else.

FAQ

Is it cheaper to run the AC all day at low power?

No. As long as the room is warmer outside than your setpoint, heat keeps flowing in, and every hour of runtime pumps it back out. The cheapest pattern: shutters closed all day, switch on an hour before you need the room, sleep mode overnight. Inverters make long runtimes efficient, not free.

Is a fan enough instead?

Sometimes. A fan cools you, not the room: moving air evaporates sweat, which works well up to around 30 °C. Beyond that, and in humid tropical nights, it mostly stirs hot air. At 1.2 Rp. per hour it is unbeatable value, so the honest ladder is: shutters first, fan second, portable split when sleep starts failing.
